My Grandma Blanket

My Grandma Blanket.

BY far one of my most treasured possessions.  My grandma gave this to me when her health began to turn.  This quilt was made by my great grandmother (my grandfather's mother).  This handmade quilt is nearing 100 years old.

I often like to think of my great grandmother as she made this quilt by hand in her home.  What was she thinking when she made it.  Did she dream about her children snuggling under it for warmth on a cold winters night? Did she dream of making such an heirloom that would eventually bring comfort and warmth for 5+ generations of descendents?

My drear Grandma Char, taught me many things, but the one thing I value is her sense of heritage.  I value the pride she took in making memories and leaving momentos for her family.  There is an item in nearly every room of my house that I inherited from my grandma.  But above them all, this blanket has become my favorite.

This blanket was an item that was present at the hospital for each birth of my three children.  This blanket is the one that I selfishly horde on cold winter nights.  This blanket is the one Hannah has termed the sick blanket.  Because when she is feeling under the weather, she asks specifically to borrow Mommy's grandma blanket.

I love that she has already begun to cherish this heirloom at such a young age.  Because as much as I want her to love this blanket as much as I do, I too want her to value the heritage behind it.  The love that went into each stitch.  The comfort that each tatter represents.  And maybe one day, my granddaughters will ask to sleep with "grandma's blanket" when they don't feel so good.

Above is a picture of Marion and Leota Davis.  The talented Lady behind the quilt.
