Well, where to start.
August 6th Brandon had yet another surgery on his foot. (this made 12). The skin on his ankle died about a week afterwards because there was too much scar tissue in that area, this left an open wound the size of a small apple. We were sent home from the hospital with a home nurse care and basically the home nurse did not work in a sterile environment and caused a bacterial infection that got worse. We kept asking him if it was infected and the home nurse said no, and against our better judgment persuaded us against taking him to the hospital.
On Sept. 17th, he had a high fever, chills and strong leg pains. after calling Dr. Kevin, he listed off the signs of bone infection and Brandon had every symptom so after consulting with his doctor we took him to the ER. He has been in the hospital since. The tissue around his foot has all died and the bacterial infection had already burrowed past the bone and into the ankle. He has had 7 more surgeries since (about 2 per week) cleaning out the infection. Unfortunately, the type of infection he obtained can go into a dormant state and come back so they had to take out all the screws and pack his foot with antibacterial beads, then have them removed each week. (very painful!)
On Friday Oct. 6th, they had to do a skin graft from his calf muscle to transplant tissue over the open wound (now the size of an orange.) If the bacteria is gone, then the skin graft will heal over the wound and we are in the clear. If the bacteria is not gone, but has gone dormant, then it will resurface and reject the transplant. If that happens then we are faced with the option and decision of whether or not to amputate.
AS of today it looks as though the skin graft is failing. Dr.'s anticipate surgery on Friday, and another 10-14 days in the hospital minimum. They want to peel back the graft to see if there is new tissue growing underneath.
We Trust in God and have already seen many blessings for his kingdom. Brandon has kept his spirits up and uses the quiet of his hospital room to grow closer to our Lord and hone in his much talented art skills. Through his optimistic demeanor he has opened up conversations with most of the nursing staff about God, including one young male nurse who is a confessed Muslim. He has also been invited to join the Board of Chaplains for Northern California Kaiser once he is healed. We KNOW God's hand is in this, we can see God working through this. We trust him no matter the outcome. Brandon and I laugh jokingly saying: "If your foot causes you to sin....cut it off."
Along with this we are battling with the decision of whether or not to pursue legal accountability for the lack of care he received from the home nursing company as many of his doctors and nurses are telling us that we should. Please join us in this prayer.
Kids and I are hanging in there but missing daddy terribly. Thanks for your prayers. I also cannot thank you enough for Dinners. They have been a tremendous blessing, having one less thing to worry about.
