Couragous but naive

I don't often get politcal but has anyone else been following the story of Marisol Valles? Marisol is the 21 year old FEMALE criminology student who stepped into the role as police chief of the violent town of Praxedis G. Guerrero after all other city officials where either murdered by the drug cartel or fled for their lives.

"Valles was hailed as the bravest woman in Mexico for agreeing to head up the town's police force when no one else applied for the job in October. Warring local drug gangs had beheaded other city officials--but Valles, a criminology student, said she overcame her fear for the good of her community. Valles said she would focus on administrative tasks and community-building, and would not take on the drug cartels."

Although I agree that she was more brave than just about anyone else, I think it was a little nieve to think that her actions would cause change and that she would be treated any differently than her formers. In fact, after containing her position for several months now she has recently been forced to flee and seek asylum in the US after death threats from the cartel.

Besides the obvious racial distinctions going on, I think Americans need to grant her assylum. She is the type of citien i want, someone willing to make positive change, and so many illegal immigrants are granted sanction why not let her. But the heart of the matter is the growing drug wars faring in mexico. I think it is about time America stop playing democrat in the middle east and start focusing on our own backyard. it would be pretty naive to think that the borders that don't protect us from illegal immigration are gowing to protect us from the drug cartel once they seek to expand their already infiltrating boundaries.
